Making Vine, Lanzarote

Vineyard, Lanzarote Jan 2020

The method of growing vines in the La Geria valley in the southeast of Lanzarote is unique in the world.
In 1964, the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York declared La Geria Lanzarote’s Valley a work of art and awarded the winegrowers with the “Engineering without Engineers” award.

Many thousands of vines are spread across Lanzarote. The winegrowers dug cones into the volcanic ash and surrounded them with a semicircular wall made of lava stone. The wall protects the sensitive vines against the northeast trade wind.
